Other information about RefWorks

How does RefWorks compare to other bibliographic software?

RefWorks currently lacks some of the features of EndNote (a bibliography manager also widely used at Northwestern. Specifically, RefWorks does not have the ability to connect directly to online databases (via z39.50) to conduct a search. EndNote is currently able to process results from more Northwestern-accessible databases than RefWorks. However, the list of databases supported by RefWorks is growing. If you use a specific database that RefWorks doesn't support, let RefWorks know by letting us know.

What's next for RefWorks at Northwestern?

Northwestern acquired its license for RefWorks in early Fall of 2002. Future plans include:

  • Setting up a local RefWorks server for Northwestern users
  • Promoting RefWorks in composition courses and WCAS freshman seminars
  • Offering support to users through online resources, library workshops, and the Writing Place
  • Working with RefWorks reps to make Northwestern-specific changes and improvements in RefWorks
